Starting up a new farm for the last year now - infrastructure, infrastructure and then some more infrastructure. Roads, utilities fencing and so on. Finally to the point of adding some chickens - bought a few from MyPetChicken but considering buying some next time from these guys here http://www.efowl.com/Black_Australorp_Chickens_p/1053.htm

Anyone had any experience with them? Checked with Tractor Supply first by users recommendations but they only have those around Easter time.

Greetings from Kansas, informative, and

! Happy you joined our community! Congratulation on your farm! I have had and currently have some BAs - great birds - good layers, quiet, friendly, seems like they want to go broody once in awhile, but overall I really like them. Good luck to you!

Welcome to BYC. It is too late to buy chicks at TSS [tractor supply store, TFS-the feed store] but hatcheries are still hatching. Australorps are great dual purpose breeds. They lay large brown eggs and a good meat bird if you need them to be. They are pretty typical birds in looks and are good mothers. As far that other place, chicks are chicks and the hatcheries themselves don't breed the chickens, only hatch the eggs. Buying from any hatchery is like picking a marble from a bag randomly. The breeders can be from anywhere and have any chickens and bloodline.

Thanks for all the welcomes - so about ten days into our day old's and we lost 60% (3/5) of the Australorps within 48 hours of arrival some sort of pneumonia or something caused them to cough up a huge snotball and choke on it as near as I could tell. It's odd because I am sure we did everything correctly but best guess is the shipper failed to include a heat pad so they probably caught colds in the 70 degree post office for hours? The Red Star is (1/1) tough as nails and doing well - kind of like that chicken breed also.

So I decided to go with Langshan's on the reship in the hopes they will be more durable in shipment and hopefully shipper remembers the heat pad.
