I am moving the majority of my chickens up to the remodled goat barn as soon as I am finished with it. I will be putting in windows for lots of light and a large chicken run. Seperate quarters for my two Polish roos will be at one end with their private yard.
As I plan for my feeders I have been looking on BYC and found most of the homemade feeders are made using plastic buckets. I do have some around here, but I also have some plywood from recycled shipping crates. I got both free.
Is there an advantage to plastic over wood? If I make one out of wood I can plan for it to hold 50 lbs of food which would be nice since I have 31 chickens that will only grow and eat even more. Wood would take up less floor space and I could make it long enough to accomodate a number of chickens at once.
Are there any health issues associated with wood vs. plastic that I should consider? If I use wood I will put it on an inside wall so there will be less moisture (I live in Western Washington -- rain, rain, rain). I could get my 50 lb. capacity using 2 plastic buckets if that will be better for the girls.
So many decisions.
