This all started a few years back. We thought it be fun to have a few chickens running around the backyard. So we did the obvious thing. Go on Amazon and buy the $100 coop that houses 6 chickens. Get super excited when the package arrives, build the coop and then raise an eyebrow. “6 birds in this thing?” This was the point that we introduced Crystal, our guinea pig, to her new summer home.

2020 comes along and we realize that having a food source might be convenient. Built 6x10 A-frame coop/run and ordered 6 barred rock eggs because pullets couldn’t be found. Threw together an incubator out of an Omaha steaks cooler, an eBay temp controller that’s Celsius, an oven lightbulb and an old computer fan.
Our eggs spent 11 days in transit, thanks usps. And a true thank you to our seller that sent us an extra egg. We had little hope in a successful hatch with the extended travel time in the cold weather of Philadelphia and the diy steak box incubator. And then.... 4 hatched!!!!! 3 on day 21 and one on day 22. The last one was the smallest egg. He only lasted 2 days. Poor Jo Jo. Of the 3 remaining, we’re pretty sure 2 are cocks but we have hope.

3 Easter egger and 3 black australorp eggs in the steak box.
