Hi my name is Dave. I got my family 4 young hens yesterday and we love them. We have been talkong about getting chickens for a year now so i did a lot of research. We have a coop with 2 areas to lay eggs and plenty of space for them to run. The girl have there laying pellets and we added a dash of oyster shells, demascus earth and the little stonesso they are healthy.

We let them free range our yard for atleast 7 hours yesterday ans this morning again like 5 hoursbut it seems they prefer the shade and the coop. Is this normal?

Congratulations on getting the new birds!

I don't know what your weather is like right now, but if it's warming up your girls could need some relief from the sun. Do they have water outside? Also, since you just got them, they may just be being cautious until they get used to their new home.

Nice to have you here!

Those were my thoughts. Yes they have water and they are curiously starting to wander. It does not help that my 3 year old son was yelling a lot.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

I'm glad you and your family are enjoying your 4 hens! I love small flocks!

Yes I would agree. They are probably just seeking refuge from the heat.

Nice to meet you, Dave! Welcome to the flock!

So glad you have joined us. And congrats on your new flock.

My hens also seem to prefer the shady parts of their coop/run even in the winter during the morning hours. I think it is a natural instinct to avoid sunny spots when the sun is at certain heights it prevents them from watching for sky predators?

Good luck with all.
