Hey there!
My name is Amber. My husband Jimmy and I just moved to a 31-acre property in Frederick County, Virginia, (although just barely, our next door neighbors are in Hampshire County, WV). We are living here and taking care of the house and land for the man who owns it (who lives 4 hours away). We are getting our garden going (late!), and last Monday, got a mixed flock of 51 chicks (straight run) from McMurray.
We will probably keep about 20 for layers, and the rest will go for meat. We probably will end up with about half males anyway since we got em straight run, so that should work out fine.
The chicks are happy and healthy, and after a day of pasty butt (which cleared up with some yogurt and apple cider vinegar) have had no problems so far! (knock on wood)
We built them a big brooder box, and are planning to put them all on pasture in a Salatin-style movable pen. When the layers start laying (or the broilers are ready for processing), I plan to move the layers to a different movable coop and use poultry netting to let them free range.
I look forward to learning a lot from everyone here! Here are some pictures of the little puffs!
