My young flock of hens (with their one rooster) all hatched earlier this spring (April/May). They have been with my six older laying hens now for a couple of months with no problem. They all seem to get along well, but just this week I went into the coop after roosting time and found the younger flock does not roost in the "roosting area" with the older hens, this is also the same area where our nesting boxes are located. My set up, the best I can describe it is this.... We have a large fenced in area of yard, where they all water and get their treats and do their daily yard thing, inside is a large open area where the feed is and extra straw bales are stored, off one side of the enclosed area is the "roosting room" (the size of a nice horse stall), this is where the nesting boxes are located as well as the roosting poles and it can be closed off at night for protection. Despite the fact the new flock and the six older hens all get along wonderfully during the day, the younger flock (three barred rocks, six golden laced wyondottes, two cuckoo morans and their buff orpinton/easter egger cross rooster) all roost in the open area of our "Barn". I want them all to roost in the Roosting area for I can close them up and protect them from predictors when the need arises.
What is the best and least stressful way to correct the roosting habits of my young flock??
