Hi, I'm Connie. I live in Washington State near Portland, Oregon. About 4 months ago an Indian peacock walked in our front gate and made himself at home. He seems to enjoy our bird feeders and the company of the many smaller birds that stop by for a snack. He goes on walkabout some part of every day but the longer he is here, the less he seems to roam. As he has grown used to us, if we are outside he usually pops right over beside us, leading my husband to think the bird's been on walkabout less than we imagine. Like so many of you note in the forum, he has become our watchdog only he doesn't announce arrivals, he just follows them around at a safe distance.

When he first arrived I went to my neighborhood website and asked if anyone knew who the bird might belong to and quickly found his owner, a man with a small farm about a mile away from us. Since he has a flock of peacocks and this one seems happier elsewhere, he suggested we keep the bird on a trial basis with the option to call him with questions or have him come and get the bird.

So, with the all clear that the peacock was going to stay, at least for awhile, my husband named him "Big Bird" or "BB" for short. I added "King" because of his crown of feathers so he is now officially "BB King." And, with his royal blue neck, he is truly a Blues Man!

My reason for joining Backyard Chickens is so I can find more information about peafowl and share it with my husband. BB deserves our best efforts at caretaking and we feel honored he seems happy with us. We're determined for BB to stay as wild as possible. For example, we don't want to clip his wings or put him in a pen at night. We want him to choose to be here. He needs to forage for his food as always, have great adventures that speak to his birdy soul, and think of us as a couple of friends who provide some rockin' good snacks along the way and a quiet place to rest his head.
