new from Bangor area, Maine

Someone is my office is ordering chickens through McMurrays hatchery...I was reading through the site and was wondering if anyone has had experience with cochins, araucanas, polish or buff brahams. From what I was reading they seem to have nice personalities and don't look like they'd have too big of a problem with Maine winters...

araucanas arent' likey going to be what you are hoping for, they'll most likly be EE's but they'll be good layers. I don't think you'll be disappointed with their ability for any of them. My bantam barred cochin was from Mc Murray i was told, and she's just as calm and gentle as they get. Sweet little puff ball. I think you'll be happy with them. And in my area, the Colorado Rockies are similar to the winters we've had in Bangor. Mine all do well. Not same breeds but similar. I have EE, RIR, Silkies, and bantam cochin. Unheated, uninsulated coops. cold, wet damp winters, ice storms, the works here, just like home.

when I was researching my breeds I was told the brahmas do well here, the polish might have problems with the crest feathers, but I have appenzeller spitzhauben and they have crests and did fine this past winter, araucanas from a hatchery are really EE's (true araucana come only from breeders) which also do very well and come in a nice variety of colors usually. My cochins are bantam, but the only problem I have had is the mud

, but they do well

Welcome to BYC! I have lots of breeds that do wonderfully here in Maine. The only ones that I have a bit of an issue with are the single combed roosters. Everyone else thrived during this freezing winter.

Banter, the duckings (?) or goslings (?)are adorable!!!!!!!!!

Hey Neighbor,
I'm in Bangor too (actually Hermon, right on the Bangor line) and another member is in town as well, (jennyhaschicks). Blue seal in bangor is taking orders now for may delivery. Welcome to BYC, its such an awesome place to learn all you need about chickens!

by the way, I've had austrolorpes, light brahmas, rhode island reds, buff orpingtons, silkies, wyandottes and easter eggers. Hens did winter fine, slight frostbite on my buff orp roos comb, but he's fine now, no treatment needed. Good luck!
