I want to build a walk in coop from recycled materials as is practical & get maybe 3 chicks. My hub had them as a kid, says too much work & we will have to stay home. Any comments either way are welcome. I prize honesty!

Welcome!

Stay home as in....not be able to run to the movies or travel?

As long as your coop is SECURE, You have a large waterer and a big enough feeder you could be gone for dayssss!!

it's always better to have someone check on them. Sometimes the waterer gets knocked over - no water. Food can run out or spoil (if it gets pooped on,wet moldy etc. ) Chickens can stage battles against one another etc with no referee. If any have an accident or ailment, the flock can turn to cannibalism. When folks are absent is usually when loose dogs or predators demolish the flock. Bad weather is another possibility and any damage it can cause. Your flock can also be prayed upon by two legged predators that will steal or vandalize.

I hope you will realize I am just trying to show you the other side of the coin. "Murphey's Law, if something can go wrong, it will!" The things I mentioned can and do happen.

So If you plan for something to go wrong, you will think of a back up plan.

I like your idea to use re-purposed materials to build a coop. People do manage to keep poultry and leave town too...you just have to make plans for all contingencies.

Best of luck to you!
