Cali here. We have a cabin coop made from a lot of leftovers. We have a bucket nipple watering system and large feeder and they can go for weeks without us. We like to let them out in the yard though, so just trade eggs for the neighbor kid popping the door twice a day.

Hardly any kids in our neighborhood, none I'd trust really. One fence to pop over & go swimming. 8 ft. Is a huge deterrent to me-but not kids. I do have a lady next door tho. that may be the deal.

You may meet someone very close to your area that you may be able to make friends with..to help you watch your chickens....??
