New from California Central Coast

Sorry about the unfinished post. Anyway im new to this thing, but ive always wanted to live self sufficiently bringing my family and i closer where we came from. And knowing what is going into our bodys is another plus.

Anyway i happened to score a coop for free and i am working on repairs painting and placement, once everything is set up and ready what breeds work best out her in the Mediterranean climate of los osos? And what plants would benefit my coop? being that i wish to be as free range as possible and let the chickens help out around the yard.
If anybody has any pointers or and knowledge on where to aquire layers for cheap, our possible donation that would be totally awesome! Im not looking for anything huge just 3-4 hens. Dont want to bite more than i can chew. Thank you

Welcome!

You have posted on an old new member introduction and while this is not a problem, you might want to start a new thread of your own. Navigating BYC can be a little tricky to start with but you will get the hang of it pretty soon.

You might also want to pop in and say hello on your local thread where you should get some good tips regarding climate and plants etc: https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/26/where-am-i-where-are-you ‘Find your State’s thread.

I also recommend a visit to the Learning Centre; lots of good tips there: https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun. Unlike non chicken loving friends, family and colleagues, BYC’ers never tire of stories or pictures that feature our feathered and non feathered friends
