When I was twelve years old I decided to go into business for myself. Being raised in a multi generational setting, the old family farm (no longer "farming"), I asked my Grandfather to assist me and Chicken Little Enterprises was born. Grandpa knew a lot about chickens as one of the many iterations the farm went through was as a chicken farm processing thousands of broilers a week in the time leading up to and through world war two. We scratch built a coop, and cool "nests" for the chickens to lay eggs which rolled into a collection hopper when the proud mothers, never to be, stood up to admire their accomplishment. I sold dollar stock certificates to neighbors and purchased my feeder, waterer, wood chips, oyster shells, feed. etc. and eighteen pullets. Over the next few years I learned about care, and "processing". Not only was it a growing experience but it strengthened my relationship with my grandfather.
My wife and I have been planning on making this same experience available to our children for the last few years. We also feel very strongly about being self sufficient to a greater extent than we have been over the years so our plans have not just been focused on poultry but on establishing a small family farm with the primary goal of eventual self sustenance and sharing with extended family. The final motivation is eating healthy and to the greatest extent possible, organically. This year the money is saved for us to get started. Chickens and a few turkeys are being added to the garden and fruit trees. Spring time should bring 25 egg layers and 25 meat birds, what I feel is a reasonable starting number.
I was thrilled to find this web site with such an active forum community. For the four of five children who can read it has become mandatory! We are looking forward to taking advantage of the collective wisdom of the forum and sharing our own experiences along the way.
