new from colorado

Hi my husband and I are just starting to get interested in chickens. We have a small shed in our backyard that we are going to use for a coop. No chickens yet but we are both excited to get started.

We have a rather active Colorado thread. people all over the state so someone should be close if you need some help. Lots of people hatching chicks too if you prefer local.

Oh that is great how do I find the Colorado thread?? We are going to start working on our old shed so should be ready for chicks soon. Is it
better to buy local chicks or from a store?

Yes, lots of feed stores carrying chicks right now. You can also order them on line from hatcheries, but make sure winter has lost it's grip on you so that the babies survive the trip to you.

Certain breeds are better suited for our climate. It seems like most of the hatchings on the CO forum are Colorado friendly breeds. Personally I try to stay away from single comb birds because of the danger of frostbite. Both single comb hens I have had a little frostbite this year. You are also going to get better information from any of them than you would at Murdoch or Jax.
