New from Costa Mesa

G’Day from down under Dave :frow Welcome!

If you have not found it yet, BYC has a Quail Forum.

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

I note you mention Costa Mesa in your intro but if you include your general location on your profile, this will assist others. Location, climate, season etc can be important factors when members are responding to any questions you may have and vice versa.

You might want to also Find Your State Thread and pop in and say hello.

If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of your flocks, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

Good luck with the Quail hatching!

Thanks so much for the tips! We’ve been coming to BYC for years to see what others say when we got chickens. Now that I am trying to actually breed stuff, my questions get a little more specific! This is a very friendly place to learn. Thank you!

Hi Dave,
I live in Irvine. My son lives in Costa Mesa. A friend gave him a Coturnix quail. That's how I got interested in having quails of my own (and because his quail needs some friends).
I'm attempting my first hatch. We're on Day 18 and nothing. It's quite disappointing at this point. There is absolutely no movement. I'm not giving up yet. (I'll give up after 22 days, I guess). Considering I got the eggs from 2 different places, it's definitely user error.
Soooo considering I'm going to most likely be attempting this again very soon, and you live so close, may I ask where you get your eggs?
Thank you,
Barbara

Greetings and welcome to BYC Dave! So glad you joined us. As you know, there's a wealth of info, knowledge and experience shared in the multitude of threads. Continue to browse around and see what interesting stuff you can find. By all means post away when the desire strikes you, especially if you have questions (provide as much detail/info as possible and pictures truly help)... With all the great folks here, generally someone will respond in no time at all. Please make yourself at home!

Hope you continue to enjoy the site!

Very cool! We have chickens but they are kind of my wife’s project. I got into quail because they are a bit easier to maintain and they mature so quickly. I’m still very new. Only on my second hatch, so I don’t have much advice yet. It can be very discouraging as you start. My first hatch only had three successes out of 36 eggs. 9 were full grown but didn’t hatch. I would recommend opening up all the eggs when you decide to turn it off at day 22. It’s sad work but critical information to learn so you can adjust next time. I’ve bought all of my birds and eggs from Juan’s Quail Farm. He has ads on Craigslist. He is very knowledgeable and one of the most friendly guys I’ve ever met!
