I DID IT!! I'm the proud "mom" of 6 Buff Orpington pullets. I brought them home yesterday from the local Rural King. Been looking @ them since "chick days" started @ the beginning of March. I've wanted to get some chicks for about 2 years, and they are a welcome addition to my home.

I have them in a plastic tub w/pine bedding, food and water while I make more suitable housing for them. I'm gonna try not to go overboard and build a condo for them outside!!! LOL

What newbie things should I keep in mind? I've read all kinds of books, articles and watched videos on them. I still don't wanna do something that would hurt them or make them sick. I'm only used to caring for my dog and cat.

Thanks again for the welcomes. Well, it's been 1 week, and I'm having a ball watching them grow! I lost 1 over the weekend. I guess she just wasn't strong enough. I've been keeping them warm and well fed. Now I only have 5, but they have grown like weeds since last week! It's a great difference in growth in just 1 week!

I figured out exactly what type of home I'll build for them, and will begin construction next weekend. They're gonna love it!!

I'll post some pics over this weekend.

I'm new here. This is actually my 1st post.I haven't even introduced myself yet. I just saw that you are from Fairview Heights, IL so I had to ask a question. Do you have a rooster or just hens? We are in Fairview also and I'm just starting to research the laws here. I just wondered if you have encountered any issues regarding noise/nuisance ordinances? I've read the statutes and it doesn't say anything but I am trying to be sure before we actually get the chickens.
Thanks,
Angela
