Hi,

I'm a real newbie as I don't have any chickens yet and have yet to get a coop. I have a few neighbors that have chickens and our area hens are allowed. I have a huge back yard, and a couple veggie gardens. So from what I have heard chickens are great bug hunters, endless supply of fertilizer, and eggs. :)

So I have spoken to my neighbors about what kind of coop and the best chickens that will be happy chickens. All I was told is that they have rabbit cages they turned into a coop, and they are all on the ground with a tray they pull out. Also they both have Orpingtons because they are friendly and produces eggs on a regular basis.

I have been researching on the Internet and have been reading a lot of information on this website, but there is so much out there it can be overwhelming. So I just want to ask what would you suggest for a first time chicken owner? Is there a starter kit or a special coop I should get? How many hens should I start out with? I was told three to four from my neighbors.

Thanks for any help you can share.

. A lot of new chicken owners go the premade route for coops because they don't want to go through the making blue print for them stage. Also 3 -4 sounds fine. How many eggs do you need a week? This may affect how many hens you want to keep around

Thank you and yes I think I will go the premade route too. If I could get close to 10 maybe a dozen of eggs a week I would be happy. I'm looking forward to the benefits the hens will have on my gardens too. :)

Three is a good number to start with. But make sure you get/build the biggest coop you can afford. That way you will be ready for more chickens. And you will need more chickens.
