gg layers/ pets

The first time I got chickens (in March!), I got straight run chicks from a local lady - and ended up with 7 boys and 3 girls!!! If you don't want the hassle of finding another home for roosters/processing them/ or building a separate facility for them, I would recommend ordering female chicks from a hatchery. The hatcheries are running some great deals this time of year, which could save you some $$. I recently ordered the 25 large-fowl all pullet special from My Pet Chicken (I split the order with a neighbor) and all the chicks were healthy and a great variety of different breeds. It saved me over $30 from my original plan to order fewer chicks, because of the shipping.

We ended up keeping our roosters because they are pets - we spent a lot of time with them as chicks (that is a big part of the fun of having chickens, I think!) but when they all reached maturity, the boys pestered the poor girls into hiding. So we ended up separating them. We already have a few livestock buildings for our other animals, so it wasn't too much hassle to make separate living quarters.

Good luck with your chicken adventure! It is very fun and addicting.
