Hello, My name is Dawn and I live on the eastern end of Long Island in Farm and Wine Country. My daughter works at a local Garden and Farm supply store and talked me into chickens this summer. I work for a school district and have never had animals more exotic than a Parrot. Our household includes myself, my husband, my father, my three adult children and my 10 year-old son. Below are some answers to the introduction questions:
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Yes, I am new to chickens. We built our coop in July and got our first 3 chicks around July 28th, they were just under a week old. The second order of 9 more chicks were picked up on August 9th.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We have 12 chicks total.
(3) What breeds do you have?
We have a mixed lot:
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I enjoy sitting with them. Many of them are rather affectionate.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I draw and paint, read, enjoy hiking, cooking, baking, and spending time with my kids.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I shared most of this in my first paragraph. We have four cats, one is 12, then 3, then two which are 3-4 months old. We very suddenly lost a just 4 year-old cat just before we got the chicks. He was adored and it was a shock. Thus we got two kittens after that. Then our 16 year-old senior cat passed away about two weeks ago. It's been both a difficult and wonderful summer with our pets.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I found BYC just by googling and research. I follow many groups on Facebook as well. I decided to post because I have one chick I am trying to determine it's sex (though I know it's a bit early to tell). And, because I am still learning about raising chickens.
