Hello from the Dube family! All of the information has been really helpful so far on this site, thank you to everyone who contributes. I have found that the more I read, the more options there are and different ways that people raise their chickens so after going to an info session at a local farm I have realized that I just need to relax and try things out! The local feed store is getting in a lot of chicks today and I will be picking ours up! We have the coop built, just needs the fun paint and shingles and it is ready to go! We will work on the run while the chicks are in the brooder inside.

We are starting with layers now and plan to grow into doing meat chickens as well. I am excited and nervous! I am hoping that my dogs are kind with the chicks. I will post some picks of the coop and the chicks this weekend! :)
 
Welcome to BYC and the chicken addiction, Dube family! You are right in that there is a LOT of information out there and, for the most part, no one right way of doing any of this -- ask 9 chicken keepers how to do something and you'll get 10 different answers, you have already figured out that the trick is to find what works for you and your flock.
Good luck on your chick picking trip today -- do you have particular breeds in mind?
 
Please supervise the dog at all times - we hear from so many folks that start out by saying, their dog massacred their chicks/chickens. Better safe that sorry. I always feel dogs and chickens should always be kept apart.

Ol Grey Mare - We ended up going with 4 Austra Whites, 2 Rhode Island Reds, 2 Ameracuanas and 2 Anaconas.

drumstick diva - The dogs were not even curious about the chicks so there was no introduction. I feel that I want to make sure that the dogs are introduced and understand that the chickens are not something that they can play with or harass since they are all going to share a backyard. They will definitely be supervised and only allowed in the room with me but like with everything we will have to train them with what their boundaries are and we never allow them to do something unless we feel like they can be trusted to do it. I am anticipating the dog part being the hardest part of raising the chickens!

Hi Mrsdube, Congratulations on your new flock! We are raising only 5 for the first time and they seem to be a month behind you in age. How did you make out with the coop? We are finding our way thru raising chickens with the generous help of BYC people too. I am so grateful for the information and opinions. Keep us posted on your build and how the chicks are doing.
