So, I would think it safe to say that you have gone to both the Eaton and Ingham County Fairs? If so, is Eaton County more for the kids or more for publicity of the farmers that the kids get their animals from? We were seriously considering changing counties because of the treatment my kids got from the goat superintendent last year. The kids decided that they aren't going to run and hide from him. My son wants one more year in Ingham and he totally wants to kick his township's butt in the goats again. My daughter had such a hard time when she was forced to sell her market whether that she isn't doing a market animal this year. She'll show dairy (hopefully, we need to find 2 good dairy goats if you know of any, let me know please) and the chicks. Hubby thinks he'll be able to eat some chicken, but I think the only chicken he will get will be from the store. The daughter is already getting attached.

Welcome, PattiX!

I am from the Saginaw/Bay City area. I have two teens, also. Only one is in 4-H. The other one is too cool.

So cool that now HE wants a bunny because his sister has one!

This site is a great source for info on chickens & just about anything else you are raising.

Thanks for starting a thread for newbies. Any other new members out there???

My kids last showed at Eaton county fair in 1998, I don't know much about it anymore, other than I try to buy a animal every year in support, but member vicki2x2 is from Eaton Rapids and is a 4 H leader at Eaton County. I'd PM her and ask those questions.

Great! Thank you!

Also....being a farmer and having sold stock to 4H kids, (cattle & hogs) it is nice to get some recognition as the breeder. The main focus of 4H should always be the youth. Having gone to lots of fairs I see it as common practice to somewhere list who the breeder of said animal is, but it should only be minimal.

Welcome. I'm a newbie also.
The pics show your kids having a great time! Good for them
the pics of the dogs are great also. I wonder what was going thorugh the terrier's mind as he was smelling the chick?

I agree on this, but it seems like some of the "farmers" have taken it to the level that the parents of baseball kids do. They have turned it to almost being ugly. I made the mistake of turning in a farm for neglect and the farm turned out to be owned by someone who took it out of the kids last year. It was very ugly. The other clubs even accused our club of cheating. They almost refused to let our kids show their goats, but I refused to back down and got another vet to come check our goats and he didn't find anything wrong with them. My son who at first wasn't going to be allowed to show went on to be Reserve Grand. Sometimes people forget about the kids and take the fun right out of it. We have high hopes this year.

I have been teasing my hubby saying his dog has become a chicken hawk. I think she thought it was a live treat. We have to be careful not to let them become "jealous" and include them but keep the chicks safe as well.
