My name is Kelly and as you can see from my username I don't actually have any chickens yet. I am finishing up my research and getting my husband motivated to build be a coop or shell out the money for a pre-built one. I live in a residential neighborhood that borders a rural community. I looked through my township ordinances and there is nothing forbidding chickens (though fowl is mentioned in the nuisance noise ordinance). I want a small flock and have a few questions. I am also going to post these questions in the appropriate places but figured it wouldn't hurt to put them here to.

1. Did you talk to your neighbors prior to getting you chickens? If so, how did you ease their concerns?

2. Breed recommendations --- I only want 3-4 chickens and I prefer them on the small side. Not sure I want true bantam breeds though because I want average size eggs.

3. How are chickens around water. We have a pool in our yard and wasn't sure if that was a concern.

4. If you have dogs, did they get used to the chickens. I have a large mutt who is a big baby and will probably be afraid of the chickens, and a pomachi who is the alpha. Chihuahuas aren't prey focused as far as I know but I am no expert.

Thanks for any feedback!

#3 We've got a pool, and so far, so good. Just keep a close eye on them until you're sure they are aware of it! #4 I've got 2 dogs, and they are both great with my girls! I guess its got a lot to do with which type breed you may have?

from Ohio. 1. No neighbors close, 2. If you want average eggs you will have to get standards, bantams lay small eggs. 3. They should be fine once they get use to it being there. 4. My dogs only chase the chickens if they run, but they were taught not to hurt them. Good luck
