I guess I should've come here first :-).

My family and I just acquired six pullets that are ready to go in their coop soon. (Buff Orpington, Rhode Island Red, Auracauna, black laced Wyandotte and Barred Rock).

We live in the Twin Cities on a suburban lot. I have a few questions that I posted… One is in the coop design section about run management/ keeping your flock secure from neighborhood dogs / to clipped wings or no --and one is in the managing the backyard flock about introduction to the coop.

We are excited to embark on this but I have to admit right now it feels like we bit off a little more than we could chew.

Thanks!

Pam

Welcome to BYC from Utah! That's a pretty good variety for a flock...enjoy the forum :)

Thanks Whittni!

I credit the people at this urban Feedstore we have here. They select the breeds that are supposed to be very hearty, relatively family-friendly, and good layers. In reality we have no idea what to expect ... We have really loved watching them and their behavior though. We look forward to many interesting, educational years.

Welcome to BYC!

The best way to protect your flock from neighborhood dogs is to build them a chicken run.

Enjoy all your poultry adventures and welcome to our flock!

WELCOME!!! OK, take a deep breath, relax, lots of good folks on here that like to lend a hand! Many super knowledgeable flockmasters to just hobby folks, like myself, and all sorts in between. One thing we all have in common is we love our poultry and (ok, two) we enjoy sharing that love and helping others as well as getting help when we need it.

Chickens are fun AND they make you breakfast!!! How great is that! They are also pretty forgiving critters when it comes to their care, no more than a beloved dog. Warm home free of pests, good food, fresh water and you don't have to take them for a walk!

Be sure to check out the learning center, it;s loaded with great info for beginners and many answers to your questions can be answered by checking out the threads of others asking a similar question, but never be afraid to ask! This time of year you might not get an answer super fast but that's just because we are all outside working in our yards, building new digs for our fluffy butts (the chickens, hehehe), taking care of all the new little fluffy butts, or just playing with our feathered friends.

BTW-I am a northerner too, just on the other side of the border and a bit further north. Lots of us on here. Once again, WELCOME!!!
