Hi everyone.

Chickens are new to me, and I got my first chicks about 5-6 weeks ago. I got a mixture of egg layers, plus a couple bantams, all of which I hope will be females, and 5 cornish cross beasts. So far I'm not too good on terminology, but I'm working on it.

Because I've never had chickens before I doubled each of the 6 varieties, not including the cornish cross. I lost only 2 the first night. I found a home for a couple of the extra girls, but am still working on homing the other 3 extras. If the bantams turn out to be boys I'll have to find homes for those also.

So far I'm finding it interesting to see the differing temperaments between the breeds. I'm working daily on handling each bird. Not sure if people do that sort of thing, but I would think It would make it easier to assess the birds' health later easier. I'm thinking it might reduce them from getting broody too, if they even get broody, I don't know.

Yesterday I clipped their wings because they're finally reaching some height in exercising their wing muscles. The chicken run fencing is 4' and I want to keep them in there.

I have a lovebird that needs her wings clipped, so that helped. Hahaha! It was rather nice clipping the chickens because they don't try biting me during clipping like my lovebird does.

I've discovered there are some neat breeds of chickens out there and have discovered it frustrating to find a place that I can just buy 1 of a breed. Is that possible? Then to top that off I need to make sure I can be guaranteed females, as well as getting an age that is similar to the ones I already have. I tried looking up chicken clubs in MN, but didn't have much luck. I don't know, maybe I should just stick with what I have.

Does anyone else have problems getting an avatar uploaded? I resized down to 0.01" x 0.01" and pixels below the 100 x 100, but I was still getting the message that the pic was too large. Argggg! I'd try using Photobucket, but it didn't look like that was an option.

Well, I hope this forum turns out to be an active one that I can use to find answers on during the course of this fowl adventure. I look forward to getting to know you all.

Congrats on your new chicks!!

Hey Andi!

I haven't had any luck finding clubs around either, if you find any, let me know!

I use Photobucket to edit my pictures, so you could try again.. hope you get it to work.

Hope you have fun here.

Welcome!

I live in southwestern MN and raise lots of birds.

If you are looking for clubs, I can help you with a couple at least. I am the secretary for the Brown County Pigeon & Poultry Association. Our website is www.bcppa.com. We host 4-5 swaps in the spring and 2 shows in the fall. We have members from quite a few different states. There is also the MN State Poultry Association. They hold a huge poultry show around the end of October. The contact for that would be Adrian Rademacher out of Waconia MN.

I know there's a few smaller clubs that just host swaps. There's a group out of Albert Lea and one over by Zumbrota. The 4-H kids in St. James started up the Watanwon County Poultry Patrol and they hosted a spring show this year. I'm sure there's more in northern MN too.
