My name is Jen. I've had chickens for a few years now after my mom and I bought some chicks together one spring at a feed store. I have one White Star sex linked roo, Elvis, and his slew of hens (5 Rhode Island Reds, 4 Black Star sex linked, 3 Easter Eggers, and 1 Golden Comet). I absolutely LOVE my chickens...I'm actually getting to the point where I prefer them over my dogs! lol

This is the first year that I've gotten gutsy enough to try to incubate some eggs, and it was a success!! I had all 17 eggs hatch, and all were healthy except one, who was born with a leg deformity...sadly I had to take him to my vet to be euthanized...couldn't stand seeing him being pecked on and unable to get to the feeder/waterer. They were born on 3/31, and they are all different colors and absolutely adorable. I was quite surprised to see how many people jumped at the opportunity to purchase them; I have a lady coming to get all of them today! Then I'll be off to incubate my next batch!

I'm glad to join this forum and find some people who are excited about chickens/chicks like I am. I think my husband is convinced I've lost it...and my dad likes to make fried chicken jokes...coworkers thought I was crazy until I started bringing in fresh eggs, so now I'm Jen the Chicken Lady: Bearer of Great-tasting Eggs. lol

I'm looking forward to meeting all of you!

to BYC! I wish I knew your incubation "secrets!"

Glitterbug...I think what helped me A LOT was that I let the incubator stay on for a few days empty so I could stabilize the temp, and then I also got an automatic turner too...I work full time, so I knew I wouldnt' have the time to turn them every few hours. The only problem I ran into was when they hatched, they weren't fluffing out like they were supposed to, so I had my sister hold them in a fluffy blanket under a heat lamp while I emptied most of the water out of the 'bator. Then when I put them back in, they fluffed out nicely. On incubation day 14, I had to reduce the temp. because they were making some heat on their own. And then on day 18, I removed the turner and let them do their thing! A lot of people have been telling me that I'm extremely lucky to have such a good hatch on my first time...it makes me a little nervous for my next try...maybe it was just beginner's luck! lol

from S. Florida! Its great to have you here with us! I hear you about liking your chickens more than your dogs! I feel the same here!! Wow, that sure was a great hatch! Congrats!! Poor little one, but unfortunately, that does happen from time to time. I had that happen to me too.
