1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

So new that I don't have any yet! I anticipate getting them next spring/summer and want to start planning now.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

None! Right now we're thinking about housing 4.

(3) What breeds do you have?

We're interested in laying hens who will do well in NYC winters (roosters aren't legal here!). We are on a quiet street with an 80' x 20' yard, so we want to be sure we choose breed(s) that are suited to that space. Australorps, Wyandottes, Cochins & Speckled Sussex look like good candidates.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

The animal care is its own appeal. We keep shrimp, snails, fish, cats and lots of plants already, so we're excited to add an outdoor ecosystem to the menagerie.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

Fermenting, baking, cheesemaking, gardening, cross-stitching & building computers.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

I have two cats and multiple aquariums, and way too many plants. I love observing bacteria at work, from sauerkraut and kefir to the water parameters of a fish tank to different methods of composting.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?

BYC was a referral from the blog Counting My Chickens. Happy to meet the folks here!

Hey New Yorker, Those black and grey birds at the park, are not considered chickens. Just FYI :D I'm kidding.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow

Most breeds are pretty hardy for your territory and will do well with cold, heat and also lay well. Definitely browse around our forums, do some reading in our Learning Center and ask as many questions as needed. Welcome to our community!
