Hi Everyone,

I live in rural southeastern Ohio. We are getting chickens this week, 10 6 mo. old layers. Some are Rhode Island Red, some golden commet and some RIR and leggern mix. I'm glad to be part of BYC!

I'm new to online forums and I hope it's ok to ask a fencing question here. We are building our chicken run - a movable hoop house with fencing attached to pvc pipe. The fencing I want to use is left over from a yard fence we put up and openings between the wires in the fencing are 2x3in. Will that keep predators out? We we have everything from coyotes, skunks, raccoons, cats and neighborhood dogs. I just want our hens to be safe, especially at night. Also, should we put fencing underneath the hoop house the further deter pests? We have a 1/2 acre yard and can't let them free range. Before winter sets in we plan to build a more substantial, hopefully insulated house for the hens.

We are fairly new to chickens. Growing up my family had chickens and I am so excited to be able to give my 2 young daughters the same experience. We also can't wait to have a ready source of fresh eggs.

Thanks in advance for you posts.

from Oklahoma!

I would cover your run with tighter weave wire or hardware cloth if you can - raccoons are notorious for reaching through the wire and grabbing chickens - they are also very strong. You can look on the Coops and Run forum for more ideas, or use the BYC Search bar up there on the right - it's a great tool. Good luck and glad you're here!

from a fellow Buckeye. I have to agree with CityClucks if they are going to be in this full time until you get an enclosure for them, I would go with something smaller holed and make sure your roosts are not along the edge. Keep them in the midde of your hoop house. Good Luck.
