Acre4Me, we didn't really decide we wanted chickens 'til a few years after marrying, by which point we were in our first home in the chick-unfriendly small town (which was otherwise truly idyllic and full of friends we'd made while living there—having to leave for my husband's new job in another state was very difficult). It took us a few years to figure out where we wanted to live in the new state, but we love it where we are! Everybody takes a different path. Not a bad thing.

alexa009, there is no minimum (or maximum, other than what we can properly care for) here. Do you remember that crazy story from several years back where a man in Ohio killed himself after letting his exotic lions and tigers and so forth loose? That's not far from here. Close enough that the neighbors joke about being careful when one hears strange noises in the woods at night...make that "half-joke".

Thanks FlappyFeathers! The town wasn't dumb, just a bit backwards. One of our neighbors was a city councilman and very receptive to the idea, but I think it was just going to take folks a while to get with the times. Ah well. So far as the garden...if nothing else they'll look cute roaming around in there.

PouleChick and N F C, I like Buckeyes (if they're bred for Ohio, they should do well here, right?) and Dominiques, as well as the sort of standard classics like Leghorns, Brahmas, Barred Rocks, Sussex and Rhode Island Reds; Hubby likes the flashier birds like laced Wyandottes (and they are beautiful). He likes Silkies, too, but Ohio keeps getting record rains, so they are probably not a good bet (plus they'd really be pets only). We both like Australorps and the Jersey Giants (mostly because a bird that big is pretty cool to have around, and our property is partially wooded—the birds will be better off if large and fairly smart). There are so many different kinds of birds, and so many we like, it's probably a good thing. If our top choices aren't available, we're just as likely to be happy with others.
rjohns39, thanks! I didn't know about the underground, though it's not surprising to read about such a thing. Our lot was small enough (early postwar neighborhood) that it would have been pretty hard to hide even two or three birds.

Zanesville itself is about 2.5 hrs from me. I was looking to Buckeyes for myself in the spring. When I have breeder info I can let you know.

Thank you! We're not far from Zanesville ourselves and occasionally hit the antiques places there. Plus the buildings downtown are quite pretty (but I'm a photographer of old places and old cars, so that sort of thing really appeals to me).

Here are our Big Black Jersey Giants at 4 months: Jupiter is the boy and Juno is the female. They are on the lowest roost.

Here they are at 9 months with some of our Australorps. The cockerel standing is an Australorp.

We got the BJG and the Australorps from an OH hatchery in Oceola, OH (Eagle Nest Poultry). They get their BJG eggs from a breeder. They are so big and pretty, we like them as well!
