HI All,
I have had chickens off and on since I was a teenager. kept them in my house one winter in CA. Lied to the neighbors about a goose I had in the back yard, telling them it was a rare tibetan terrier
called a "Honksu Apso", and their bark sounded like a goose..
I started off last year with a friend and I going in on some Polish bantam chicks, she quit buying food, so after a while I found homes for hers except one we liked.
I have three older hens that are retired 4H show chickens, they don't lay but are great birds.
1 giant black cochin, 1 silver lace wyandotte, and a Partridge rock. I have heart breaking results with frizzle bantam cochins, it seems whomever they are getting them
from as chicks, (I have gone to 2 different sellers-private not a swap).. as soon as they start to mature, their legs quit working, and then they just can't walk and suffer.
I had 3 production hens, red star or RIR type, partially de-beaked, 2 died from old age and the third one is hanging in there being a happy hen, she belongs to the lady
where I keep my hens, I gave her the three when I got the 4h hens.
I have a crested polish rooster, large size, but he is so "hen" pecked he looks like friar tuck..
And late last year got two Black sex link hens.
THis year I got a large group of silkie chicks, bought more and then mixed and matched and sold the ones I didn't need. I then got an adult pair...
one of my babies grew up to be a rooster so I have two silkie roosters, and three hens. the older adult one started to brood so we put some other eggs under her.
She hatched out 4 babies, two are hers, one is a black sexlink/polish cross, and the other is (WE HOPE!!) a frizzle-cochin-polish or frizzle-cochin-brahma bantam cross.
when we lost one our frizzle bantam cochin rooster it was heartbreaking.. but before he went on.. he passed on some genes!!
I just got an aracuna chick with cross beak today so she is in with the silkies.
a large variety and hoping to ad 3 more soon, another silver lace wyandotte and two delawares.!!
They free range in the barn, and live in converted stalls to coop!!
Most of the hens have been named for adult film actresses.. but some were named for singers and metals such as Magnesium. That one is a gold laced frizzle polish bantam hen. Maggy for short.
SO lots of chickens that are odd but neat too!!
