Hi Everyone.. Many moons ago I lived in NH and had a small farm. Back then I was a happy member here. After a not so fun divorce (are they ever?) and losing my farm, I was forced to relocate back to suburbia (shudders) where I have continued to reside for seven years. Seeing as how there really financially is no way for me to return to my former farm life, I've decided to pursue as sustainable a lifestyle as I can here in my little suburban home.
My wonderful new husband grew up on a dairy farm with chickens and so forth. He's agreed to support my desire to have a few hens in the backyard. It's his connection that we'll get some new birds from, and apparently we've a wide assortment of breeds to choose from. Our only issue is that we can not find anywhere a description of what is allowed by the town in our zoning. We are zoned Rural Residential. There is a farm just the other side of the small river we are on, that is a vegetable far, agri business (has a large farmstand and I mean large) and I know they minimally have rabbits and chickens. That said I might hear from the town that they have enough land or perhaps necessary setbacks from neighbors and so forth to permit them their animals.
I am awaiting a return call from the building inspector who apparently is the only one who can tell me the restrictions etc upon my property. Hub says we should just go ahead and start out shed, with the idea we'll be using a portion of it for a few birds and then get them anyways.
Here's to hoping for happy news from the Building Inspector.. I'm not sure my neighbors would be supportive otherwise. Our home lots are only about 60x100.. so we are pretty close together. In the meantime I'm going to keep going with my gardens and composting! Keep your fingers crossed...
Thx
Nancie
