Thanks everyone for the warm welcome!! I have so missed having my farm that I am praying diligently that we will be given permission to have a few hens here. I had originally thought I'd go with standard chickens, but think now I will end up with Bantams. I think it might be easier to convince people that Bantams are *pets* versus standard chickens which could be slaughtered for meat purposes. (NOT that I am against that, I just know that would be a sticking point...)
Building Inspector returned today to work.. I hope to hear something by next week. Keep up the positive thoughts and prayers. I'm already working on my coop design!
Tentative news is we should be able to have a few hens!! YIPEE! I am so excited.. This comes from an old timer who used to raise chickens here in our neighborhood and said that since we'd not be having roos, he is 99.9% sure the town won't be able to do anything about it as the zoning here hasn't changed!
Now I've been looking at chicks on craisglist.. and am back to leaning towards bantams which I've only ever had one of before..but I feel like I could more easily justify them as pets.. plus cochin bantams are just so darn sweet personality wise.. they make great pets! Hub told me last night he can't see these as anything other than pets.. which makes me smile as he grew up working for a farmer and did it all from slaughtering to butchering chickens to cows... I'm just fine and dandy with their being pets only!!
Thanks everyone.. We hope to begin construction today on our coop/shed combination.. Next weekend chicks will come home.. in a brooder box, until coop is finished. Hub has a 3 day weekend next week (I unfortunately am working every single night..sighs).. but I am hoping we'll get our small structure up and mostly finished by then.. (with smaller odds and ends to be done).. I say that and know I am going to jinx us.. acck.. lol
So excited that all our materials are reclaimed.. I'll need to purchase hardware clothe or whatever type of wire we end up going with for the run. We'll also be buying roofing material.. I am back to leaning towards using shingles, although Hub and I had thought about metal roof for a bit. Oh I'm beside myself silly with excitement on how this is all going to turn out.. now to just get ourselves started!!
Have a great sunday everyone.. Yes I promise to take lots of pics.. hopefully none of us looking grumpy through the construction process! lol
