Hi. I live in Sheboygan, WI and inherited our 4 hens when we bought our house last year. I'm not sure their breed, but they are the friendliest chickens I've ever known! They like to follow me around when I let them out of their enclosure and come running/half flying when I call "chick-chick-chick". They are so entertaining and I have loved having them. Each has such a unique personality. My kids helped name 2 of them...Hennifer and Eggster-- chicken versions of Jennifer and Esther. I thought that was pretty cute. The other 2 were named Squawkbox (because she never shuts up once she sees me!) and Curious Georgia (because she was always the first to do or investigate anything).
Unfortunately, I found Georgia dead this morning when I went out to them. She started a bad habit a little while ago...eating the cardboard on the walls meant to keep out the drafts. I am guessing that she got sick from that. But it came so quickly! She was acting completely normal the day before. :( I have since removed the cardboard because I don't want to take any chances with the other girls.

Greetings and welcome to BYC! So glad you joined us. Sorry you had to find Georgia the way you did. It may or may not have been the cardboard. I imagine you don't know the age of the hens & she may have just been at that age to pass. Many of today's hatchery birds are bred for maximum production at the expense of other aspects, one being a long life. There's a wealth of info, knowledge and experience shared in the multitude of threads. Browse around and see what interesting stuff you can find. By all means post away when the desire strikes you, especially if you have questions (provide as much detail/info as possible and pictures truly help)... With all the great folks here, generally someone will respond in no time at all. Please make yourself at home!

Oh, if you haven't done so already, PLEASE put at least your general location in your profile. It could be very important if/when you ask for or offer help or advice. You know, climate issues and such. Old folks like me :old will never remember & look there first. To add it, mouse hover over Account top right and a drop down will appear. I also hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.
