Hi,

I'm in south Mississippi about 10 miles from the coast.

Living rurally now on 2 acres, my wife & I decided to raise some chicken now that our oldest son (6yrs) is big enough to help.

I'm looking at different coop/run designs now done on a shoestring budget.

We have neighbors with dogs so I want to keep them safe. Eventually plan on fencing the entire property so they can free range possibly?

Looking for a breed that will lay eggs & provide poultry too from time to time.

I'm new to raising chickens so I plan on starting small, maybe two or three hens.

Thanks for any help.

Hello :frow and Welcome to BYC! The Coops section of BYC has a bunch of coops of all sizes that BYCers have made, a lot pallet coops. Henderson's Chicken Breed chart compares a bunch of popular breeds, egg production, temperature hardiness, temperament etc. http://www.ithaca.edu/staff/jhenderson/chooks/chooks.html#j The BYC Breeds section has reviews of most breeds also. The best brown egg layers are probably the various red sex links, the best white the commercial White Leghorns. For a more duel purpose breed, the most popular seems to be the Rhode Island Reds.
