Hello!

The wife and I started growing many of our own vegetables a couple of years ago and have recently been pondering options for providing some of our own protein as well. We'll be up-sizing our aquaponics system to raise some tilapia, to provide some fish toward that end, but we're not going to want to eat fish all the time, so we're looking at birds as well. We don't currently own any birds (except my sun conure) but we've been looking into our options. Given our limited space and living situation, I'm leaning toward Jumbo Coturunix Quail at the moment. This place seems like a good source of info. I look forward to participating here.

Any advice on this would be very welcomed!

Thank you

Terry

When I had quail, the eggs were small and never thought the birds were worth plucking and cleaning although some people love eating them. Two or three hens don't take up a lot of space. A quiet breed like a Buff Orpington or Australope can lay an egg almost evey day but I keep only Black and Blue Copper Marans. Recently gave up on the Tilapia and the bees to put more effort on my flock. If you describe the space and zoning restrictions in detail many people may have some advice

I'm glad you joined our community.

If you're interested in raising quail, I would definitely check out the Quail section that Yorkshire Coop linked to. I've never raised quail myself, but I've always thought that they seemed like delightful little birds.
