Hi everyone, my names Ray and I have been lurking on this fourm for a while now and tomorrow I will be getting my first chicks. I'm getting them at tractor supply, and there is a 6 chick min that you need to buy so thats how many are coming home with me tomorrow. I think I am going to go with the red pullets, but they have a few others to chose form, such as Ameraucana, Assorted Bantamas, and one labled as just pullets.
I'm looking for egg layers. I got the brooder box all set up and a coop design ready and we just need to build it, its still to cold outside to put them in it anyway so we have sometime to get it built.
Any way, I am no longer lurking and soon to be a chicken owner, any suggestions on which breed i should get or maybe breeds would be awesome, thanks :)

I hope you find everything you need to know. Good luck with your chicks! The chicken breeds forum may help you decide what you want!

Decide what purpose their will be. Do you want eggs, do you want meat, do you want a bird that could be either?

If it's just eggs, do you want the potential for different color eggs (i.e. just brown or white, or would you like blue/green)?

Standard sized breeds can often do better in the winter than bantams, so another factor to consider.

Welcome to BYC!

First you might want to start in our learning center here on BYC for lots of great tips on raising your new brood, building the coop, feeding adult birds and keeping them happy and healthy...

As for breeds, there are lots of great breeds out there that are docile, friendly and great layers. I am quite fond of the Orpington breeds...Buff Orpingtons and Black Australorps. Great layers and very friendly. Here is a link to our breeds page so you can see what other members are saying about the different breeds...

Great to have you aboard and enjoy your new chicks!!

Welcome and have fun.
The red pullets may be a version of Rhode Island Reds which are great layers but tend to be the bullies of a mixed flock.
I like a mixed flock for all the feather colors and egg colors.
Make sure the brooder is big enough to have adequate ventilation and a cool space so the chicks can escape the heat.
Get as many as your legally allowed and have room for. It's harder to add birds to an existing flock.

For a breed selection chart, I prefer these to the BYC one.

No offense to BYC at all since I love it, but the above are a bit more accurate.

I find that those breed selection things on BYC are based on a backyard husbandry holder that may have very little experience with many breeds. Of course they love their chickens and want to rave about them, but most breeds are very cool and more obscure breeds need support as well as the common ones.

Alright, thank you every one for the welcome and advice, i forgot to mention that they also have red sex link chicks. So many to choose from. Like i said there gunna be used for egss, tractor supply just seems to have a confusing way of labeling them.

Welcome to BYC - of the breeds mentioned the red sex links will guarantee 100 % pullets. In sexed pullets there may be a 10% or higher incidence of cockerels.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Good luck with your new chicks, they are very cute! Both sex links are great layers, you should have lots of eggs in no time.
