Hello All!
We're a family from Washington in Kitsap County. I have been a chicken lurker for over a year now and here is what I am hoping to do. Where we came from there was a market livestock program for kids that they purchase and raise an animal for sale, generally spring to state fair time in the fall, tracking the costs. Not here though so I was hoping to duplicate it for the kids.
We're in a small community and I was hoping to have the kids do meat birds. There is the local farmer's market plus markets in each community. We can put up signs or do flyers. I don't see any issues selling birds, heck, I might even be buying
To deal with the health codes involved with butchering the birds we would be selling the birds live to the customers with the courtesy offer of delivering them to the butcher and then the customer's house for them.. the cost would be separate and for the butcher only so the kids don't have to worry about being legally responsible for the health codes.
So, I guess that's who we are and my questions are basically, has anyone here done that? Used an outside butcher? I can't imagine transporting the live adults, that is going to be interesting! We're hoping to do a tractor method. If this goes okay we may build a coop and add layers to keep some around. My son really likes chickens a lot, he'll be 12 next month.
I realize this is a rambling post, I find myself awake in the middle of the night and thought I would finally just introduce us/ask about our plans. I guess my next step is to investigate butchers in the community?
Take care everyone!
