Day 4! Started enrichment activities outside of the brooder - they’re getting so big! Will need to move them to the camping tent later this week.

Unfortunately the eggshell DNA testing didn’t work out - there wasn’t enough blood and the shells all started rotting during transit 😞

I was able to get blood samples by clipping toenails - hopefully I got enough blood (awfully tiny drops). The chicks did not enjoy this process at all, and neither did I, though a few of them were surprisingly calm.

Sent the samples today, and hoping it’s enough to get results. Maybe next week.

In other news, moved the brooder and flock to their own tent in the garage. They are happily exploring.

Sorry the first tests didn’t work out! I hope that the second try is a success!

Sorry the first testing didn't work out, hopefully you'll get results this time! :fl

A friend was over yesterday, looking at the teens and littles in the run, asked if any were roosters. Told him even though all are supposed to be female, all are suspect roosters until they lay an egg! 😉🤣

Noticed today that little Luna is not thriving like the rest of the chicks. She is noticeably smaller and seems distressed.

No pasty butt, but her poops are grey and cement-like.

Reached out to the hatchery for advice - best guess is she didn’t absorb her yolk sac all the way.

I now have her separated (with Dobby for company) back in the brooder. I have been slowly syringe feeding her a yolk-electrolyte mix. She seemed to perk up, but also regurgitated some, so I gave her a break. She’s had about 1.5-2ml

I’ll try again in a few hours. I set up the brooding plate for her so she stays warm.

If anyone has advice, let me know. I will post in the main forum if she doesn’t get better soon.

Thank you!
