We bought a new house last fall and it happened to have a chicken coop and run already in the backyard which has helped lead us to getting chicks this spring. We are new to raising chickens and ducklings, we have nine chicks and four ducklings. Although we aren't new to farm life having grown up with horses and cows and other animals. Right now we have the chicks in one brooder box and the ducklings in another. The ducklings are four days old and half the chicks are a week old and half of them are only three days old. We are cleaning out the chicken coop and run and are going to put new chicken wire on it and make sure it's predator proof. My questions are how big does my run need to be to accommodate nine chickens and four ducks? Also, we are planing on building a server are run on to the chicken coop that will house the pool for the ducks. What kind of things do you recommend for a ducks pool. There will be four of them. I'm open to any tips and advice! Thanks!

I don't know about ducks but, rule of thumb for chickens is: 4-5 sg.feet per bird (excluding nest boxes & roosts) and 10 sg.feet per bird in the outdoor run. Chicken wire will not protect against predators. It only keeps chickens in their place. For predators you will be best served with 1/2" hardware cloth securely affixed to the run frames. You may want to check the predator forum and the coops section for more about keeping your birds safe.
