Just wanted to say Hi to everyone and see if anyone had any great pre-chicken purchase advice! My wife and I just bought our house and plan on having a garden and a chicken coop right next to it for easy access to move chicken "fertilizer" to the garden. That's about it though! Been doing lots of research but you can never have enough I'm sure, especially from current owners. SO bring it on!

Welcome! The only thing I can think of is that chicken/poultry can be addictive so make your coop bigger than the minimum requirement for the number of chickens you start with.

Hello

and Welcome to BYC!
x2 on the advice Monkeybean415 gave! What breeds do you plan on getting?

Good advise! We plan on getting a rhode island red, black australorp, buff orpington, white leghorn and one more I can't remember. A good mixed flock. Only thing stopping it is If any of them are heat intolerant, as we live in the desert. But our nearest hatchery is only 25 minutes away, so the climate isn't any different

Welcome to Backyard chickens. The best place to start is the Learning Center, it has answers to questions you didn't even know you had yet. Second best - post on your state thread and ask them what breeds tolerate the climate and what kind of coops they use. In very hot areas coops may have two solid walls and two walls that are 1/2" hardware cloth attached to framing, so the heat doesn't build up inside like an over.
