Hello everyone! I am new to the chicken community.I recently got 10 chicks (easter weekend) and I got 3 five day old chicks friday. Can anyone tell me if it is a good idea to put them all together or not and why? Thank you so much!

They should be close enough in age to put together. Just want to make sure the newest ones don't have any ailments that could be spread to the others.

Thanks for the information. Im worried that the little ones will be pecked at or stepped on. I got them for my birthday and they are Olive eggers. But they are so tiny compared to my 3 week old chicks.

Welcome to BYC!

It is usually safe to mix chicks that are new to chicks that are 2 weeks old. Generally the pecking order is not firmly established just yet. Just make sure you adjust your heat accordingly. You may need to raise it a few degrees so the new babies will stay warm. Work it down 5 degrees each week from there. But when you do mix them, always watch carefully the first few days that the little ones can manage. It is always a good idea to use a large brooder to do this so the older chicks can get away from the heat, and also put out more food and water stations so the little ones don't have as much competition.

Good luck with all these babies and welcome to our flock!

If there is a significant size difference, you may want to keep them separate. If you do put them together, watch them very closely for the first few days. One technique some people use is to put a divider in the brooder/coop to give the chicks a chance to see and get use to each other before they are actually mixed.

Welcome to BYC. I hope that your Tetra Tints are not Cornish X - our local TSC was consistent at mislabeling chicks all season long this year.
