New Geese Questions

I have two new geese, and I’m a new parent. They are both Toulouse geese. They are a male and a female. I have a pond on the side of my house, but I do not have fencing around my house. I got them as adults. My question would be, can I let them out on the yard and they will not run away? If I let them out to swim on the pond, will they come back or at least allow me to capture them back? How do I need to handle this?

Geese will wander, my flock once went exploring through the woods and after searching for a few hours I found them on a nearby road scared and exhausted.
Fencin isn’t just a good idea for keeping them in, it can help keep predators out. Toulouse May look large and imposing, but their first and only defense is bluff, and once the coyotes, foxes, and raccoons figure that out, that’s it for them.

How long have you had them? I would keep them locked up for a week or two until they know where home is.
I use food to get mine back in their pen at night.

I’ve had one for a month, and the other for two weeks, though the gander is still cautious of me. I’ll have to try food. I’m so scared they’ll run away while I’m not looking

Mine can not resist fresh fruit and romaine lettuce. Give them a treat in the evening so they start expecting one before they go to bed. Try it for a week.
Things will get worse with the gander as we are moving into breeding season. He will protect the female from you, chickens, the dog ... You will need to have boundaries he can not cross but be sympathetic to his drive to guard his woman by giving him space. It will get better.

I've had geese for a few years without fencing, out all day and in a coop at night, I've never had any problems with them running away. They stay within 50 yards of the coop at all times. I agree with feeding them a treat in the evening so they can have something to look forward to back at the coop.

No issues with mine flying off so far. I'm more concerned the gander is going to call all of the neighbors' females over here.
