Hi everyone. I'm not so much a girl as middle aged and married. We have two dogs, no kids, and somehow ended up with chickens this year. A boy was staying with us until May and he bought his girlfriend a chicken. Of course she couldn't have it at home. My husband and I had been talking about how much we'd like to have a few chickens, so we let them keep it here. I told them they had to get another since chickens shouldn't be alone. Then DH & I ended up getting four more. Our Weimaraner, Gypsy, got hold of the second chicken (barred Plymouth Rock) before we got the permanent coop and yard set up.

The original chicken, a Rhode Island Red, turned out to be a roo. He's gorgeous! The other four we got were two Buff Orps, a Production Red and a Black Australorp. Yesterday, a co-worker of DH's brought over three more Black Australorps his kids were tired of, so now we have a flock of 8. We had no idea how entertaining chickens can be. My niece loves them and the neighbors think they're pretty cool.

I'm already learning plenty from reading the forum and decided it's time to stop lurking and introduce myself.

Ohhh! You're hooked now! It's all over for ya... go ahead and build a bigger coop... get an incubator,,, brooder, and start studying right here on BYC on how to incubate and hatch your eggs...

Welcome to the wonderful and mysterious world of chickens! I found out recently that my daughters (35 & 40) were telling their cousins that thanks to my chickens my blood pressure is under control and I don't need medication to keep me sane! I got my "babies" mid Jan 2010.

Thanks for the welcomes!

I can already see how addicting these little critters are. They are so much fun to watch and especially to feed. It makes sense they would help with blood pressure -- how can you stay stressed when your chickens are so ridiculously excited to see you?!

Hello and welcome....

I started with three little pullets (girl chicks), and now I have 20! How did that happen??!! LOL I am a chick-a-holic for sure......

Sounds like you're really enjoying them! They are addicting!
