Just brought home two 5 mo old mixed wethers. The toes on one look splayed with some sort of abnormal growth. I've bottle raised several, but that was years ago, and I've never dealt with major hoof problems.
Any ideas what's going on here? Have I gotten in over my head with this poor kid?
I can't get my hands on him yet. I'm keeping them in a small pen until I can gain a little trust. Until then, this is probably the best shot I can get of the feet without further traumatizing the poor guy.

He needs his feet trimmed. You can use a hoof knife. My favorite was a pair of burdizzo hoof rot clippers. If you decide to buy a pair, make sure they are burdizzo and not some look-alike from Pakistan or somewhere. Those are useless.

Someone just didn’t maintain the poor things feet. Do you know how to trim them up or can you find someone local to help you? It isn’t super hard to do normally. But you have to be careful when they are that overgrown because it makes it hard to see where the quick is. You should be able to get them back into shape with some time and patience. We bought some poor neglected Pygmy goats once whose toes were so long that they curled over and around.

We always used trimmers like these:

Thank you both! Headed to tsc today for mineral sups etc. I'll go ahead and grab a pair of trimmers too.
Do you think it's in his best interest to go ahead and trim or give him a few days to warm up to me first? They are both still really scared and want nothing to do with me. Poor little guys don't even understand treats yet!

He isn't going to like having his feet trimmed no matter what you do. It is helpful to give treats afterwards though. I believe there is a booklet called Nanny Pedicures or somesuch and I think you can get one from www.caprinesupply.com. In any event send for their catalog. It contains all sorts of helpful information.
