Hi guys, my name is Stephanie. I've been trying my hand at chickens, ducks and turkeys for 3 years now. With not much luck. Every time it becomes summer here in eastern NC and the severe thunder storms start, after every storm one or two die. I just got 10 new Barred Rock chicks today and am going to try again. I do have 1 full grown hen, a White Plymouth Rock, from last year that survived😢. However she is still not laying. I love watching them in the yard, they can be quit comical at times. And absolutely love the fresh eggs. I do a lot of cake making so having all the fresh eggs is so nice, plus the family loves them.

I'm a stay at home mom, so I got chickens to replace my babies, since they are all in school now 😁. But I love teaching the kids about the chickens, and we all are learning things about them together. I also do a lot of sewing and gardening. At this moment I am making an enclosure for our boat so we can use it even when it's cold and when it's hot we can keep cool with the a.c. we have on it with out all six of us stuffed in the cabin. And my green house this winter is doing absolutely amazing. Can you believe I've been pulling tomatoes out all winter
As I mentioned before I am a stay at home mom and thay there are six of us. My husband and I love doing things together. We do the care of the greenhouse and garden together. We even went as far as redoing our entire boat together. We had to replace the motor and rewire the entire thing. He doesn't do the sewing thing though lol. So he watched as I reupholstered all the cabin and deck seats. And then there are our 4 lovely kids. Aged 15, 13, 8 and 7. Boy are they a handful, but what kid isn't.

Hello there and welcome to BYC! :frow

So sorry for your losses! :hugs If they are dying in wet weather, sounds like Coccidiosis to me. A protozoa that flourishes in warm damp weather that can kill your birds. You might start a thread in our Emergency forums for more help.

Make yourself at home here and we hope you enjoy BYC as much as we do. :-)

Hi I am crazyhen, I know about NC storms. I live on the coast in winter and the mtns in summer. Chicks Need lots of protection. Build a fort knox if you want to keep your chicks. Listen to the information on this site. It will save you money and loads of time. Welcome to chickens they are habit forming.

Hi Stephanie!!

How are the turkeys doing? I haven’t had any turkeys, might leave it for next year when I have all my chickens where I want them.

I’m a stay at home mom too but I’ll then turn into a homeschool mom. Sometimes I dream of just being a working mom especially since this August the kids would have been starting pre-k, but they are so attached to me that I don’t think I ever could leave them.

So sorry for the dumb question, but the boat you’re redoing. Is that where you live or is it parked next to your home? I’m not quite understanding.

Welcome to BYC!! How far east are you?? My husband and I are hoping to retire to the OBX in a few years! I'm sure the weather does present a lot of different challenges than I'm used to for keeping chickens though!
Thanks for joining our flock!

We got the boat after Hurricane Florence. The storm took our roof and destroyed the ceiling and walls in the house. We were told we couldn't stay in the house with the kids so hubby, who had been thinking about getting a boat for months decided to get one with a cabin in it for us to stay in. We got a used one and had to redo some stuff right away to it. Then after we got the house fixed we redid the inside of the cabin and we used the boat last year. This year we have started redoing all the pin stripes and I'm making an enclosure for the deck so if it rains we can stay out on deck instead of all of us being cramped up in the cabin.
