New group of chicks to help with sexing...7 weeks old

Sounds like you're a victim of what we call 'chicken math.' The more the better.
Yup this is why bigger another coop and bigger lol

We're getting into chicken genetics here, kind of complicated. But here's the thing with barred rocks. The males carry two barring genes, the females one. The red roo over a barred female produces sex links because the female only passes down one barred gene, and it always goes to the males in that cross. The female chicks have no barring gene.

What that means is your barred boys only have one gene for barring, unlike a purebred barred rock male, which has two. So if you cross your boys onto a non-barred female, only half of the chicks will be barred. The other half won't be. And they won't be sex linked. That only works in the original cross between the red roo and barred hen.

There is a forum on here dedicated to genetics. It's interesting stuff, but definitely confusing for the beginner. I only know a little bit about it.

Hmmm so would be nice to find another barred chick pullet down the road...or now if i can find any....i really like the looks of them
