New guy from Kansas

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to our flock. I used to raise Black Australorps in northern Kansas. Not only are they calm and gentle, and they best layers of the brown egg laying standard breeds, but they handled the winter cold (down to 30 F below zero one winter) very well. Please feel free to ask any other questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Do you have any breed preference?

I don't know enough about chicken breeds to have a preference I guess. I'd prefer some that are pleasant to look at(beauty is in the eye of the beholder?) and are good egg layers. There's some speckled chickens that caught my eye as well as red or black. Preferably not white. I also have no desire to raise any for meat. And of course, as you mentioned, they would need to be tolerant to the colder weather for a few months out of the year.

Oh and calm would be a plus. I remember, back in my younger days, gathering eggs for my uncle and being attacked by his crazy chickens. Haha. :P

My personal favorites are Black Sex Links (Black Stars) and Australorps, but of course every member on here has their own personal favorites. Ultimately the best chicken for you is the one that fits your criteria, whatever that may be. Murray McMurray has an excellent "chick selector" tool at https://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/chick_selector.html to help you determine which breeds are best for you. If you decide to use it, just be sure and click on "show more characteristics." Whatever breeds you end up getting, good luck with your flock.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Buff orpingtons are my favorite breed and I would recommend them to you. They are sweet, cuddly, cold hardy and great layers.
