After convincing our city council that having backyard chickens is an ok thing guess its time to build a coop and get some chicks(come spring)

Raised meat birds years back but now it will be just 4-5 hens to lay some eggs(hopefully) and be a 'chore' to help 9yrold granddaughter some sort of responsibiity

anyways just looking to learn more before venturing forth

You are not a complete novice, but I think you'll find the Learning Center helpful and informative. In the Breeds section you'll find more info on the different breeds and their characteristics. Welcome to BYC, fellow Wisconsin-ite. We're waiting for our nearest city to become 'enlightened' to the value of chickens.

Fortunately, we're out in the sticks and can play fowl as much as we want. Our 9 year old granddaughter keeps trying to get a pair of chickens at her home in town. As she tell it, her 'girls' at grandpa's would love a summer visit - even if she couldn't keep them there during school months. She is an eggs-pert in coop viewing and dreaming here on BYC.
