new guy in Md

Hello from Md. I am new to this wife wanted chickens "chicks are cute" so guess what we now have. We got 4 R.I.reds,2 cinnamon queens, 2 Black Jersey giants that are now 5 weeks old. I got a XL 10+ coop from The Chicken Coop Company now its up and has a run around it I dont think was the best choice just doesn't seem it will be big enough for them i could be wrong. Trip to Tractor Supply for grit and more bedding got us 2 Blue Laced Wyandotte that are now 2 weeks old. The young lady that helped us when we got the first chicks told me about this site and said I could find lots of good info here so here I am!

Hiya, and welcome to BYC!

I so wish you'd joined before you bought that coop as we would have all told you those prebuilts hold half at most of what they say they will. Chickens need 4 sq foot each in the coop, and you're probably already over that. To avoid them picking on each other or other issues, maybe you can consider a remodel of the one you bought.

HI, welcome to BYC! Fortunately your little ones will be okay in their current digs for another few weeks but when they are grown, yeah, it will be too small for them and they may start refusing to go inside at night. It probably doesn't have adequate ventilation either. Can you navigate to our Coops section to get a better idea of what they'll need? If not, ask and someone will help you.

Hi, I agree with the other greeters about the coop being too small for a flock your size. If you can post a picture of it, maybe we can make suggestions on how it could be modified. Best wishes!

I did hardware cloth under the run also the run has chicken wire and hardware cloth around sides then folded up cloth that's on inside or run so three layers ten inches up tp keep critters out. I also have another smaller coop I could put together also to split flock up for more room.
