First intro...41 year old married man with wife of 20 yrs (high school sweet heart), 2 children 6 & 4yrs...
I have been browsing your forum / web sites for a while now....No chickens or coop yet, just some plans and indecisions....Well my Lil' Flower (wife), just called me and said her friend will be dropping off a rooster and a hen this weekend.....Hmmmm...I thought we were still in the talking stage, but.....sounds fun lets go for it.

I was always planning on going to the local TSC store, and starting with Chicks, but change of plans sometimes work out better, and I do like the idea of having eggs sooner than later...

As far as the Coop and Run...That should work out pretty quick (thanks to you guys past post... I think ).

One of my main question is...How will the rooster and hen get along in the same coop, and how will that effect egg production??? and Would I be able to introduce Chicks at a later date??

I won't be able to monitor this forum constantly, but I will check throughout the day / weeks ahead...

Thanks for now!

the roo and hen should get along fine. When you get new chicks, quarantine for awhile and let them get bigger before introducing into flock...

I think you would be happier if you picked out some chicks........I really LOVE the chickens I have that I raised from babies....they are just so much friendlier and they have great personalities.

It can be difficult introducing new chickens to established ones. First of all you need to wait until they are roughly the same size or the bigger ones will just beat the crap out of (or even kill) the smaller ones.

I've always been sorry when I purchased adult chickens from others....it's like having a scared wild bird in a cage. Alot of the times you can't even get near an adult chicken you haven't raised.

But if you get chicks, and you pay attention to them and handle them often, they become great pets as well as providing you with eggs. Also I want to let you know that you don't need a rooster to get eggs.....hens will still lay eggs, they just won't be fertile.

Good luck to you and welcome!

Thanks for all the kind words...I just got off the phone with the wife, and it's a go...we will be getting the rooster and hen...so....maybe will make our own chicks )...The girl were getting them from has raised them like family, and assures us they will be fine in their new home; we'll see....The funny thing is we told our 4yr old we were gunna get the chickens she saw over at Karren's, and she was pretty excited, and asked if we were going to get the puppy too...So who knows???

I do have another question....I have read that the coop should be white washed inside, and have windows to help with light and egg production, but I also read that it should be dark inside...? The coop is near the exterior Mercury light.

Thanks again
