Hey me and my family just bought a 100 acre ranch... the broken spoke ranch. It came with a coop in moderate shape. We have this little area near the front thats about 1/2-3 acres of land (i know broad)... It is really good land... i want to move the coop and fix it up.... put chicken wire around that 1/2-3 acre area and have that be there home.... The chicken will be very docile hopefully and mainly for ornamentation purposes... We will only be there for 2 days out of the week so i am allotting them this very large piece of land so i do not have to feed them often or maybe even at all.... i am worried about predaters and their diet with me being there only 2 days out of the week....

edit: I am thinking of Plymouth rocks at the moment...

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Here in NY your not being there to change their water clean their coop would be neglect so please, please, please , DO NOT get chickens.
 
Kuhl make several range feeders for poultry. I use a 75# unit and it lasts about 10 days for 25 birds. They do make a feed that hold 300#. I would look at install a drip watering system so they are never without water and I would enclose the area you're keeping them in with at least 2 strands of hot wire.
 
You sound like you are a caring man, and you will be sure your flock is well maintained. There are options for keeping feed out while you are not there. Mine free range and really never go to their feed. all the bugs and worms and now the starting of spring grass they are healthy and happy. I keep a large pan of water under the outdoor faucet and keep a slow drip going, so there water stays fresh. I also throw scratch out for them a couple of times a week, and any other treats I may have for them. Predators, now that is the biggy. My chickens and roosters go to roost in the trees, way high up. I do keep traps out for any coons or other nightly preds. I feel what you are talking about is doable, just think it through. I worry about you not being there and them not being used to you, you basically are going to wild hens that aren't the pet chicken you sound like you may want. My Game hens are the best when it comes to avoiding danger. I do have one thought, what is your purpose of having chickens if you say they are going to just be ornaments, if you are not there to enjoy them but only 2 times a week. good luck with whatever you decide.

from Indiana! Like Opa said, they make free range feeders, and hey, theres even automatic waters that will hook right up to a water hose! Wala! Fresh water! Make sure you chickens have a tree or bush to hide in and under incase of hawk attacks! Sound Good to me! Enjoy!

Yes this is very good quality land with trees of many kind and brush... i do not see why the land can support the flock while I am gone for 5 days. water is not a problem i can set that up.... I am only thinking about a dozen chickens of the plymouth rock kind or possible a bantam.... For the defence aganst predaters... The enclosed area i would say its about 2-5 acres actually and it has a 6'-6'6" barbed wire fence that i would put chicken wire on... i want only hens so that they can not start an uncontrollable population on my property.

This i really take offence too. I have a 90 gal. reef with corals and anemones. that where if the salinty, temp, nitrates, or ph fluctuate even a little bit everything will die... you do not even know me and you are saying this "seriusly and truthfully"?There is a horse that has lived on the ranch for years.
