I can't answere your questions, as i have no experience. About a month ago, i gave a broody silkie hen 9 eggs to set on. She added one more egg the next day so she had 10. We got ZERO chicks. I was just letting her do her thing, figuring she should know what to do. I did have her in a cage inside our coop, so she was near the other chickens but no one could bother her nest. I only gave her food and water, and freshened her litter every few days---but left her nest entirely alone. She would peck me if i got too close to her on the nest. I never candled the eggs, but i have seen the roosters on the two silkies that we took the eggs from. Strangely, my broody hen ate some of the eggs. There was one that she kicked out of her nest after 3 wks---i opened it and there was a partially formed chick inside, but dead of course. I finally got the hen to leave the nest. Then I found at least one broken shell and blood in the bottom of the nest, but if she hatched a baby, it was dead and gone. I was rather surprised we got nothing at all---i thought nature's way was the best way to hatch chicks. I don't even have an incubator. I've decided i'm not going to try hatching eggs again any time soon. My main focus right now is to get my layers grown and start laying for eating eggs. My oldest pullets are now about 4.5 months old, and i have several younger age groups. I might see if any hens go broody in the future, i might let them try again, who knows.
Hi heather, i told them you are the #1 egg hatcher

Hi All, Kellen here... I've been on hiatus from the board after a fox incident which took out 15 of my youngsters out in the pen. (during the day!) I had 6 left. So I sulked for a while, and wasn't sure if I'd even keep chickens anymore. I loved them so. Sheree helped me out with a more secure pen AND the Darlin' won some eggs to hatch for me. So precious. Thank-you again!
It would be fun to try and hatch them myself and experience the personal joy of MotherHen-hood, so if anyone is winding down on their hatching-habit, and has an incubator I could borrow for 3 weeks, that would be wonderful. I could let you keep my first-born for collateral. She does dishes I'm in Temple, but could take a drive to most places in Southern New Hampshire.
